Village of Mala tsarkva is located in South-West Bulgaria. It is part of Samokov Municipality, Sofia District.Natural sights and monuments of culture in the region Protected areas: Rila National Park; Central Rila Reserve; Vitosha Nature Park. Samokov is the place where Paisiy's famed Slavic-Bulgar book of history first began to be disseminated, the first municipal school was opened, the first print shop started operating, it is also the birthplace of the most popular painting school during our Revival Period - the Samokov School, founded by Zahari Zograf. An icon-painting, lithographic, engraving and wood-carving school were also developed here. It was in Samokov that the first Bulgarian magazine was published - Lyuboslavie, published by Konstantin Fotinov. Some of the more noteworthy landmarks: Shishmanovo kale - archaeological finds, remains of a medieval Bulgarian town, near the village of Dospey Town museum; Otets Paisiy Memorial Community Centre; Belyova Church; Women's Monastery; St. Nicholas Church; Bairakli Mosque; The Big Water Fountain (Goliamata Cheshma); Chadar Cheshma; The Synagogue; The Bishop's Church; Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Church; Sarafska House. Environmental Protection and Tourism The municipality features quite favorable natural conditions for developing tourism and is among the few municipalities categorized to have potential for winter tourism of international scale. Borovets is the largest international mountain resort in Bulgaria, located on the northern slopes of Rila Mountain, 10 km from Samokov and 73 km from Sofia. The resort consists of 26 hotels, 15-20 holiday villages accommodating about 5500 people. There are also conditions to develop balneology tourism in the municipality. The thermal water of Balchin Spa and Baths are suitable for the treatment of various diseases and for use as potable water. The Shtarkelovo Gnezdo (Stork's Nest) locality near the Iskar artificial lake is a traditional recreation place with potential to develop camping and fishing tourism and water sports. There are plans to establish a tourist settlement Samokov-Borovets-Beli Iskar, a tourist localization Iskrovete with capacity to accommodate 20 000 people, 100 km. of ski-slopes and lifts. There is also an idea to establish a recreation zone in Northern Rila.
